Picture this: you are about to head to the gym and you look down at that dazzling sparkler on your hand. You start to think, “this ring is too pretty to take off, but should I wear it to the gym?”. This may be a thought that runs through many people’s minds every day, Rosettes, but we’re here to share some of the top big no-no’s for where you should not wear your bling. We know it may be rough to learn these guidelines, but it is always our priority to ensure your once in a lifetime ring is set up for success! Let’s go through some of our commonly asked about activities.
The gym is probably one of the top places where you should not wear your rings. If you think wearing exercise gloves will solve the problem, sadly, it will not. Bummer! Your ring can snag on the gloves causing stones to loosen and prongs to shift; this rule applies to other types of gloves as well as you will soon learn. Another element to consider is when you are using the gym equipment. Lifting weights especially can take a toll on your ring in the form of scratching the metal or misshaping the ring itself. If enough pressure is applied, your ring can become deformed. Yikes!
If you’re partaking in a little yoga sesh at the gym, it’s best to leave your ring at home too! When you apply pressure to the mat with your hands, that can cause stress to the ring, which can result in it becoming misshapen.
Whether it be at a fitness center or a legit mountain, rock climbing while wearing your rings can cause a whole lotta harm. Your ring can knock up against some rocks, which means you can possibly lose some stones or worse, your finger will get caught with the ring. This is where defingering or removing skin from your finger happens…graphic we know. We want you to have your pretty rings around for years to come – we strongly advise not to take any risks in this situation.
Wait…so you’re saying I can’t even wear my ring to work?! Depending on your career, Rosettes, this is a possibility. If you’re a doctor or a nurse, for example, wearing rubber gloves can damage your ring! Pressure from the gloves can alter your ring and prongs can puncture your rubber gloves that will lead to cross-contamination. Eeek! To avoid this tricky situation, we suggest maybe pinning the ring to your coat or uniform. In general, if your occupation requires you to use your hands in potentially harmful situations, it’s best not to wear your rings.
Many may think a gentle swim in the pool can do no harm, but a little chlorine can lead to long term damages in your ring. Chlorine from the pool, for example, can break down the precious alloys over the lifetime of the ring; the same thing can happen to certain gemstones where the chlorine can break down mineral over time. As for the beach, sand and the water, in general, can get caught in the crevices of your ring. The saltwater shouldn’t damage the ring, but it can take a bit of work to clean the ring with the salt and sand trapped in it. That just sounds like an unwanted hassle that no one wants to deal with. Can we get an amen Rosettes? For a quick cleaning fix, our cleaning kit or cleaning pen are great tools to use to make your piece temporarily look as good as new. For a more thorough cleaning and inspection, we recommend stopping by or sending in your ring.
So…are there any solutions to this conflicting situation? There sure is! Our top recommendation would be to safely store your jewelry while you are participating in any activities like and similar to the ones mentioned above. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and it will be guaranteed safe if you leave it at home. No harm, no foul!
If wearing a ring is a must, opt for a silicone ring! You can knock this ring around as much as you want and no damage will come of it. Better to have it be this one than your gorgeous engagement ring or wedding band, right? Overall, it is your call on whether or not to leave your ring behind for a little bit. After all, mindful wear is the best care!
