February Birthstone Guide: Amethyst

It’s officially the month of love and time to put a spotlight on a new birthstone! February is all about the amethyst. This alluring gem bears so many unique properties that we are just dying to share with you, Rosettes. Let’s take a step into the world of amethyst!

Meaning

The name amethyst derives from the word “ametusthos”, meaning not intoxicated. Wait...what? According to early Greek legend, the amethyst is associated with the God of Wine, Bacchus. Angry over an insult, he declared that the first person he encountered would be devoured by his tigers. Who just so happened to be strolling by and fell victim? None other than a maiden named Amethyst, who was on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. In order to save herself, she sought protection from Diana and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. So... what does this have to do with anything? Bacchus ended up feeling bad and poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem (aka Amethyst) its lovely purple hue. It all makes sense now, doesn’t it?
The amethyst is the purple variety of the quartz mineral species. The gem comes in quite a variety of shades too! The color ranges anywhere from a lovely light lilac to a deliciously deep reddish royal purple (sometimes referred to as “raspberry”).

Origin

While we have heard the main origin story of the amethyst, there are a few other things that you may be curious to know! Ancients called this stone the “Gem of Fire''. It was considered a precious stone worth, at some points in history, more than a diamond! Who would’ve thunk? Last but certainly not least, and very fitting for the month, the amethyst is the stone of St. Valentine and faithful love. How sweet is that?!

Healing

Have no fear, the amethyst is here! This gem is all about enhancing your environment in the best way. Amethysts have an inherent high frequency that purifies the aura of any negative energy or attachments, thus creating a protective shield of light around your body. Negative vibes will not be in your domain and you will be able to live a positive life! Any stress that you may be feeling will slowly start to disappear when you wear a piece of amethyst jewelry.
The amethyst will overall bring about a greater understanding and it will initiate wisdom. You will understand your purpose and continue to live the life you always wanted. Go out and do you!

Metaphysical Properties

You’re a creative individual and the amethyst is the perfect stone for you! It has been known as a wonderful talisman for the creative arts, especially if the stone is of a darker shade. Your passion and drive will allow new ideas to flow and put these thoughts into action - which of course leads to bringing your projects to fruition! It’s time to make your dreams a reality, Rosettes!
Not only does the amethyst unleash your creativity, it’s a great stone for meditation! The gem stills your mind and allows you to maintain your focus on the important things in life.
