This birthstone was discovered by a man named Francisco Spinoza back in 1554 when he stumbled upon what he called a “brazilian emerald”. This find was recorded as the first green tourmaline ever found and eventually led to other colorful discoveries of this gem!
Tourmaline ranks a 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale and has a wide color range in intensity and tone. In fact, this birthstone has one of the widest color ranges in any species and there are five different types of tourmaline species out there! How cool is that?! These species are: uvite, elbaite, dravite, liddicoatite, and schorl. Within these species, the gemstone’s colors can range anywhere from pink, yellow, red, purple, green, and brown just to name a few!
