Hello July! Summertime is in full swing and a new month has arrived. We dove into the world of the ruby last year, and now we are going to put a spotlight on the onyx – specifically black onyx. The mysterious looking stone holds an array of powerful properties that will do you a whole lotta good. Let’s see what this unique gemstone is all about!
Meaning
Onyx derives from the Greek word for “claw” or “fingernail” because the marble-like white and yellow veins seen on the stone resemble the colors of a fingernail. Sounds bizarre, but you’ll understand why shortly 🙂
Origin
The onyx has quite the interesting origin story. As the myth goes, the goddess Venus was resting on the banks of the Indus River. While she was asleep, Cupid used the point of one of his arrows to give her a manicure. The pairings of her nails then fell into the river. Since the nails were of heavenly origin, they sank to the bottom of the river and turned into onyx.
Sure we’re familiar with onyx in jewelry pieces but back in the day, it had other uses!
