Meaning
Onyx derives from the Greek word for “claw” or “fingernail” because the marble-like white and yellow veins seen on the stone resemble the colors of a fingernail. Sounds bizarre, but you’ll understand why shortly :)
Origin
The onyx has quite the interesting origin story. As the myth goes, the goddess Venus was resting on the banks of the Indus River. While she was asleep, Cupid used the point of one of his arrows to give her a manicure. The pairings of her nails then fell into the river. Since the nails were of heavenly origin, they sank to the bottom of the river and turned into onyx.
