As we’ve explained before Rosettes, not all gems are created equal. That is the case when it comes to moissanites and diamonds. Which one has more sparkle? Which one is in my price range? Each stone offers something different and we’re here to help you make your decision a little easier. Let’s dive in! Â
What is a Moissanite?
Ahh, a gem that shines like the stars and is incredibly rare. Intrigued? Let us share more! A moissanite a rare, naturally occurring mineral that’s also known as silicon carbide. They are so rare that all of the gems are lab grown. Why is that? Moissanites come from the stars! They only crystallize when a meteor hits the earth. Isn’t that out of this world?!
When it comes to durability, the gem ranks a 9.25 on the Mohs scale. As you'll find out a little later on in the post, a moissanite is not too far off from a diamond. In fact, it ranks higher than any gemstone besides a diamond!
Let us share a little history! Moissanites were discovered by French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893. He originally thought that they were diamonds but he was deceived! After some research, he realized that the crystals were composed of silicon carbide. And just like that, the moissanite was born!
Appearance
Moissanites sparkle similar to diamonds, but as you’ll learn, there are differences. Believe it or not, moissanites have more fire and brilliance compared to diamonds. What does that mean? A moissanite emits rainbow flashes (especially in the sunlight), which give a fiery appearance. Who doesn’t love a little extra sparkle?

Price Comparison
Now let’s talk money. While the size of the stone is a factor in terms of pricing, the gemstone themselves play a role too. That being said, regardless of the material and size, a moissanite is definitely more affordable than a diamond. For diamonds, the combination of 4 features will determine the overall pricing of a stone.
The price of a diamond depends on The 4 C's of Diamonds: color, clarity, cut, and carat. Lab grown diamonds are graded on the same scale. Between the two options, lab grown and natural, lab grown diamonds are more affordable than natural diamonds.
Which is the Right Choice for Me?
At the end of the day, you know what option is best for you. If your dream ring is a traditional diamond, go for it! Dreaming something different? Perhaps the alternative lab grown or natural gemstone is a good fit for the non-traditional bride! Currently, sapphires are one of our top trending diamond alternative options in our shop. Sapphires are a popular option that is more affordable than a diamond, while still being considered a traditional classic.
