November Birthstone Guide: Topaz

November already?! Time is really flying by this year Rosettes, and with a new month comes a new birthstone guide. We talked about all things citrine last year, and now it’s time to discuss the month’s other birthstone, topaz. This eye-catching gem has a plethora of unique properties and facts about it that we think you’ll enjoy. Let’s explore the world of topaz!

Meaning

Why have one meaning to your name when you can have two? The first meaning, and what most experts agree upon, comes from Topazios. This is an old Greek word for a small island that’s found in the Red Sea, but is now called Zabargad. The second meaning derives from the Greek word “topazion”, which translates to “fire”. Whichever one it may be, they both sound pretty cool, right?

Origin

Topaz gems can be found in quite a few countries all over the world! Brazil, Russia, Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, and Utah among others. Little fun fact: Utah named the topaz their state’s gemstone in 1969 since some topaz stones are produced there!
When it comes to the shades of topaz, boy is there an array of them! Colorless, blue, green, yellow, red-pink, brown, orange, and grey - this gem has it all. Topaz is allochromatic, meaning that its color is caused by impurity elements or defects in its crystal structure instead of by an element of its basic chemical composition.
Wonder how some stones get their specific color? Chromium is what gives pink, red, violet to purple topaz’s their coloring while imperfections at an atomic level give blue, yellow, and brown stones their color. One last cool fact in regards to color is that the topaz is pleochroic. What does this mean exactly? It means that it can show different colors in different crystal directions! How sweet is that?!
