What Causes the Discoloration?
Contrary to popular belief, the reaction that occurs is not a manufacturing defect. It is, rather, a few factors that contribute to this reaction. The first of the factors is if one has a higher acidic diet, which affects the chemicals released from the body. You can “potentially” release chemicals from the body that reacts to the copper in the rose gold.
Because everyone’s ph balance is different, there is no magic formula that determines if your body will react to the copper. It really boils down to trial and error unfortunately. Usually, from our experience, you should be able to see if your skin reacts to the copper in the rose gold within 30 minutes of trying on the item.
Another factor that can affect the chemical reaction is mixing your personal sweat, lotions, etc. We’ve found that sometimes when you combine a number of chemicals together, this can potentially affect the discoloration. Something to keep in mind is that the copper in the rose gold mixture is sensitive and fairly reactive to other chemicals. It is not you having an allergic reaction like some believe. Fortunately, this reaction only happens to roughly 20% of people.
Is It Normal for This Reaction to Occur?
While this reaction does not happen to everyone, it can occur. No matter the purity of the gold, the reaction is possible. It all simply depends on the person. There is no way of knowing how the rose gold will react unless one tries it out.
What Can I Do to Stop This?
There are a few steps that you can take to prevent and hopefully eliminate the reaction. As previously mentioned, a highly acidic diet, or high acidic skin chemistry, can cause discoloration. Consuming less of the acidic foods can reduce this reaction. We understand this is an extreme change, but this is a more permanent and long term solution for fans who enjoy the rose gold color alloy. The other option would be to choose a yellow gold option.
Making sure that your hands are clean and dry is also something to keep in mind! We always recommend removing your ring prior to washing your hands, doing the dishes, etc. Not just because it can cause build up within your ring, but the combination of these elements can potentially cause a reaction. We want your ring to stay pretty forever! We have some simple tips for you to follow to make sure your ring stays in tip top shape!
Lastly for our die hard rose gold fans, you can paint a thin layer of clear nail polish on the inside of your ring. This creates a barrier between your skin and the rose gold. We’ve heard some success with this solution! Every 2-3 months, remove the coating and reapply a fresh coat of clear nail polish. Yup! It’s as simple as it sounds.
We wish there was a set formula on how to eliminate this reaction but since everyone’s body chemistry is different, it’s challenging to provide a single solution.
